The Role of an Interpreter
Interpreters are bilingual (some are multilingual) language professionals. Their role is to provide language support.
Under special circumstances, face-to-face interpreters can act as ambassadors to support your business endeavors as a language conduit, or they can abide by a strict code of ethics and complete confidentiality as a ‘linguistic tape recorder’ to meet official requirements.
By clearly defining the expectations and role of the interpreter at the time of booking, the most suitable framework can be set and reasonable expectations met.
Interpreters can adapt to a range of environments from working in front of the camera for news releases and film launches to completely behind the scenes in a conference sound booth as required. For this reason, we have an extensive pool of interpreters in order to cover a range of backgrounds from legal and medical to export marketing, education and the arts.
Our interpreters can work in three ways:

How to use our service?
General Instructions
• Talk directly to your client as if you speak the same language
• Speak clearly, with frequent breaks
• Don’t interrupt or talk over others
• Don’t ask the interpreter to step out of role, e.g. to give an opinion
SINT
• Sit close to the non-English speaking client
• Position the interpreter at an equal distance from you both
TINT
• Use a speaker phone if possible
• Wait while the interpreter is connected to the call
VRI
• Position the video camera in a location that will capture both parties
• Wait while the interpreter is connected to the call
SINT interpreters are booked in advance. The more notice and information you can provide, the better. The role they play and their field of expertise needs to be clearly outlined with one of our project managers when making a booking so that the right interpreter can be provided for you.
We can travel around New Zealand to provide interpreting service if required and handle calls nationally and internationally. We can provide service beyond regular office hours upon prior arrangement (After-hour rates will apply) If cost is an issue, then telephone interpreting (on-demand or booked in advance) may be the solution for you. There are two options for Telephone Interpreting (TINT) and Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) modes. Pre-bookings for Casual Use and high volume On-Demand Use on a fixed contract.
Casual use is for clients needing a one-off or infrequent solution. TINT and VRI are cost-effective when you do not physically require someone onsite. Book a time in advance or call us to connect in real time.
A 15-minute minimum charge applies per engagement making telephone and video significantly more cost effective than face-to-face. On-demand telephone interpreters are available within 1-2 minutes. Future date bookings can be done through the booking form or through our call centre team (0064-9-5359398, 0064-275888398). All calls are managed through our secure, confidential, state-of-the-art, telecommunications platform.
We also provide high volume on-demand telephone and video delivery on a contract basis. This caters to frequent-use corporate clients needing a specific language for rapid response and connects you directly to an interpreter by IVR without routing through an operator. Credentials, Ethics and Interpreter Support
Depending on the role and language pair required, most interpreters will have a recognized qualification, a minimum of 4-year’s documented experience in the industry and or belong to a professional body in New Zealand, Australia or the United States. There are minor exceptions where rare or emerging languages and community/migrant groups simply do not have access to industry-specific qualifications or training.
Irrespective, Brightness Translations Ltd provides all NZ-based and Australia based interpreters with supplementary training to vet, select and insure our local interpreters work in accordance with professional workplace standards. In government agency work this may include protocols, ethics and procedures guided by the Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi, The Health and Disability Commission Code of Ethics, Immigration & Protection Tribunal Code of Ethics and the NZSTI Code of Ethics irrespective of membership.
Our services focus on government agencies, educational institutes, new migrant groups, as well as any private individuals and community users. Our interpreters are usually native speakers of the languages they interpret. They are sensitive to community customs and needs. We aim to supply a culturally appropriate interpreter in each circumstance. We also assist to provide qualified NZ Sign Language interpreters for the Deaf.
Interpreters are commonly booked by health care service organizations, government agencies or private businesses (for instance, legal firms). Public services are generally free to the non-English speaker. This reflects New Zealand’s human rights legislation and the Health and Disability Commissioner's Code of Rights, which promote people's right to effective communication. Our interpreters serve hospitals, health centres, courts, tribunals, police, immigration, housing, and wider local and central government organizations.
We can provide interpreters for embassies, international delegations or special interest groups containing non-English speakers. We also provide interpreting services to private individuals e.g. to consult an accountant, lawyer, medical specialist or other advisor.
Our professional interpreters are experienced in Police and legal work, IRD interviews, public and private healthcare appointments, workplace training sessions, international sports events, conferences and event launches, international delegation visits, business meetings, company tours, site visits, and a wide array of private functions.
We also train interpreters to the highest standards. We employ and provide interpreters in over 50 languages and dialects, including Sign Language. Often, the interpreter is the only one present who understands everything that is being said. This is a serious responsibility – it calls for trained professionals.
